David Locklair has been a dedicated member of the SMC Global team for the past eight years, serving as the Environmental Health & Safety Manager at our Kershaw, SC location. In his role, David ensures that the company complies with governmental regulations and reporting requirements while also upholding voluntary safety and environmental standards. He collaborates with teams across the organization to create and maintain a safe work environment for employees and the surrounding community. Additionally, he manages safety data sheets (SDS), product labels, the product matrix sheet, and investigates duties and tariffs, along with overseeing product files and quality specifications within our operations system.

David’s journey into environmental science began at Clemson University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry in 2013. During his senior year, he took a course called “Chemistry of Aqueous Solutions,” taught by the head of the Environmental Engineering and Science Department. She introduced him to a paid Research Assistant position, which allowed him to continue his studies at Clemson and ultimately earn his Master’s in Environmental Science in 2015.

Over the past eight years, his role at SMC Global has evolved significantly, especially as the company has expanded beyond South Carolina to include locations in Texas and Kansas. With each new site comes unique challenges and regulatory considerations, making his work increasingly dynamic as he ensures compliance and safety across multiple states.

What David enjoys most about working at SMC is the opportunity to wear many different “hats.” The variety of responsibilities has allowed him to gain experience in areas he may not have encountered elsewhere. He also values the camaraderie and friendships among his coworkers, making the workplace feel like more than just a job.

Before his career in environmental health and safety, David held some unusual jobs. In high school, he worked at a company called “Bean Bag Boys,” making bean bags, and he also drove the picker at a local driving range to collect golf balls—a job that often turned him into a moving target for golfers. Outside of work, he enjoys spending time with her girlfriend Megan on Lake Murray, wakeboarding, gardening, playing guitar, and hanging out with his dogs. Recently, he has also taken up jiu-jitsu.

A fun fact about David is that he has a fraternal twin brother. He’s currently binge-watching Ghosts, and if he could have any superpower, he would love the ability to fly. As a child, he had various ideas about what he wanted to be when he grew up, and today, if time allowed, he would love to learn how to play the saxophone—or maybe improve his golf game. One thing he absolutely can’t live without? Chocolate milk.

David’s contributions to SMC Global are invaluable, and we are grateful to have him as part of the team.
